The Posing Masterclass is a 46-page tutorial built for models who are just starting out — no experience assumed. Every pose has a short code (for example ST-01 for the first standing pose or SR-03 for a saree pose) so you can practise in order, track progress and tell a photographer exactly what you have prepared.
| Part | What you learn |
|---|---|
| I · Foundations | The 14 shoot types you will do, posture and a 10-minute warm-up, camera angles, the ten golden rules, facial expressions, and hands, legs and feet. |
| II · Poses by position | Standing, leaning, seated, floor and crouching, lying, walking, movement (hair flips, twirls, jumps) and stairs and architecture. |
| III · Poses by shoot type | Digitals, e-commerce, headshots, beauty, jewellery and hands, accessories, editorial, commercial and TVC print, golden hour, denim, tailoring, gowns, saree, lehenga and bridal, kurta, fitness, resort, curve modelling and ramp walking. |
| IV · The professional model | Photographer directions and set terms, twelve common mistakes and fixes, a shoot-day kit and checklist, an eight-week practice plan and how to stay safe. |

The ten golden rules of posing
Every pose in the guide is built on the same ten rules. Learn these first and even simple poses start to look professional.
- Shift your weight onto the back leg so the hips angle and the front knee softens.
- Create an S-curve — shoulders one way, hips the other.
- Make triangles with bent elbows, bent knees and hands on hips.
- Leave negative space between your arms and waist.
- If it bends, bend it — never lock elbows, wrists or knees.
- Keep hands soft: side of the hand to camera, fingers gently apart.
- Chin forward and slightly down to sharpen the jaw line.
- Shoulders down and away from the ears.
- Put a thought behind your eyes — empty eyes kill a good pose.
- Move between frames: change one small thing on every click.

Camera angles every model should know
Turning your body changes your shape on camera. The guide teaches three basic angles — front (0°) for digitals and product fronts, three-quarter (45°), the most flattering for most faces and bodies, and profile (90°) for beauty, jewellery and silhouettes. The single most useful trick for beginners: turn your body 45° away and bring your face back to the camera.
Standing, seated and movement poses
Part II groups poses by what your body is doing, so you can adapt to any set or location:
- Standing (ST) — the hip turn, hand on hip, arms-up power stance, thumb-in-pocket profile, street stance.
- Leaning (LN) — shoulder to wall, foot on the wall, railing lean, arm up the wall.
- Seated (SE) — bar-stool perch, armchair crossed legs, side-saddle profile, chair-back hug.
- Floor and crouching (FL) — reclining on one elbow, knees hugged, mermaid side-sit, studio crouch.
- Lying (LY) — on your back with an arm overhead, propped on the elbows, the upside-down editorial frame.
- Walking (WK) and movement (MV) — walk to camera, look-back walk, hair flip, the twirl, joy jump.
- Stairs and architecture (AR) — foot on the step, sitting on the steps, gown on the staircase.

Poses by shoot type
The same pose can be right for one client and wrong for another. Before every shoot ask: who is this photo for, and what are they selling? Part III gives a chapter for each kind of booking:
| Shoot type | What the client wants | Guide chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Digitals / polaroids | Unretouched, honest casting photos | DG |
| E-commerce and catalogue | Clear, repeatable, product-first frames | EC |
| Headshots and portraits | Chin, eyes and shoulders under control | HS |
| Beauty and makeup | Close-ups with slow micro-movements | BT |
| Jewellery and hand modelling | Relaxed hands, piece turned to the light | JW |
| Editorial and high fashion | Bold, angular, story-telling shapes | ED |
| Commercial, lifestyle and TVC print | Natural, warm, believable moments | LS |
| Outdoor and golden hour | Soft light, flowing fabric, glow | GH |
| Denim and streetwear | Relaxed attitude, wide stances, crouches | DN |
| Tailoring and formalwear | Clean lines, posture, stillness | TL |
| Gowns and occasionwear | Drama, grace, fabric control | GW |
| Fitness and activewear | Real movement and athletic shapes | FT |
| Resort and beachwear | Wind, water, easy holiday mood | RS |
| Curve modelling | Angles, space and confidence | CV |
| Ramp / runway | An even, confident walk and a clean end pose | RW |

Saree, lehenga and bridal poses
Indian ethnic shoots reward slow, graceful movement and attention to detail. The guide has three dedicated chapters:
- Saree (SR) — show the pallu, border and pleats: pallu across the body, backlit drape, railing elegance, namaste welcome.
- Lehenga and bridal (BR) — the bridal stance with the skirt spread, dupatta flare, eyes lowered, adjusting the maang tikka, hands with mehendi.
- Kurta and fusion wear (KR) — seated on the grass, walking in a sharara, dupatta on the shoulder, kurta flare hold.

Beauty and headshot poses
Close-up work is about millimetres. Practise hands in the hair, framing hands, chin on hand, the downward profile and a relaxed three-quarter headshot. Learn the “smize” — smiling with your eyes by lifting the lower lids slightly — and keep nails clean and neutral for every beauty shoot.

Twelve common posing mistakes
Every new model makes these. The guide pairs each with a fix:
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Stiff, locked limbs | Bend every joint a little; breathe out before each frame |
| Same pose every frame | Change one thing per click: hand, head, weight or expression |
| Claw or fist hands | Side of the hand to camera, fingers soft and separated |
| Arms flat against the body | Leave a gap of light at the waist |
| Double chin | Forehead forward, chin out and slightly down |
| Hiding the product | Keep hands and hair away from prints, logos, necklines and pockets |

How to practise: 15 minutes a day for eight weeks
Short daily practice beats long sessions once a week. The guide includes an eight-week plan and a self-assessment checklist. Each day:
- 3 minutes — warm-up: neck and shoulder rolls, wrist and ankle circles, a face warm-up.
- 6 minutes — mirror work: one chapter, every pose code twice, hold each for two seconds.
- 4 minutes — film yourself on your phone at chest height: three variations per pose.
- 2 minutes — review and write down one thing to improve.
By week two, take your digitals — six simple frames in fitted basics against a plain wall. By week seven, bring six practised pose codes to your first test shoot. In week eight, choose 12 to 20 of your best images and create your free ZJELL Models portfolio.
Stay safe while you learn
Never pay anyone to be “selected” or for a compulsory portfolio, never shoot alone with a team you have not checked, agree wardrobe and image usage in writing, and remember you can say no to any pose or outfit at any time. Models under 18 must practise and shoot with a parent or guardian present; on ZJELL Models, minors are represented through a guardian account only.

Model poses FAQ
How many poses should a new model learn first?
Start with about twenty: the six digitals frames, six standing poses, four seated poses and four headshot angles. Once you can do those without thinking, add chapters for the categories you want to work in. The free Posing Masterclass PDF numbers every pose so you can track what you have practised.
What are the best poses for a first photoshoot?
Keep it simple: the three-quarter hip turn, hand on hip, shoulder-to-wall lean, a seated perch on a stool, a walking shot and a soft-smile headshot. These work in almost every shoot type and give the photographer plenty of usable frames.
How do I stop looking stiff in photos?
Bend every joint a little, shift your weight onto the back leg, breathe out just before each frame and change one small thing on every click — a hand, your head or your weight. Stiffness usually comes from locked knees, raised shoulders and holding one pose too long.
What should I do with my hands when posing?
Give them a job and keep them soft. Show the side of the hand, fingers gently separated, and touch your hair, collar, pocket, bag or hat lightly rather than gripping. Page 10 of the guide lists ten hand rules.
Are saree and lehenga poses different from western fashion poses?
The principles are the same — weight shift, angles, soft hands — but ethnic wear needs slower movement and more care with the pallu, pleats, dupatta and jewellery. The guide has separate chapters for saree, lehenga and bridal, and kurta and fusion wear.
Is the posing guide really free?
Yes. The PDF is free to download and share for personal practice, and creating a model portfolio on ZJELL Models is also free during the current launch phase. There is no registration needed to download the guide.
