How to Calculate Age ? Your exact age is the number of full years since your date of birth, then the full months since your last birthday, then the days left over. Someone born on 15 May 2000 is 26 years, 4 months and 19 days old on 4 October 2026. The quickest way to get that figure for any date is the free ZJELL Models age calculator; this guide explains how the count works, where people trip up, and why an exact age on a specific date matters more often than you would think.

How to Calculate Age? Why “how old are you?” needs an exact answer

Most of the time a round number is fine. But forms and contracts ask for age on a particular day, and the difference between 17 years 11 months and 18 years 0 months decides what you can sign, where you can work and who has to sign for you. A few everyday cases:

  • Castings and shoots — a brief for “models aged 18–25” means 18 on the shoot date, not at the time of application. A model under 18 on the day needs a parent or guardian on the paperwork and on set.
  • School and university admissions — age cut-offs are set to a fixed date (often 31 March or 1 June in India), so a child born a week either side lands in a different year.
  • Visas, passports and ID cards — minor and adult categories, fees and validity periods all switch at 18; some countries change again at 60 or 65.
  • Insurance and pensions — premiums are priced on completed years at the policy date; a birthday next week can move you into the next band.
  • Employment — minimum working age, probation and retirement dates are all calculated from the date of birth.

How to calculate age by hand in three steps

Take the date you want the age on (today, a shoot date, a form date) and the date of birth, then work from the largest unit down.

  1. Years. Subtract the birth year from the current year. If the birthday has not yet happened this year, take one off. Born 15-05-2000, today 04-10-2026: 2026 − 2000 = 26, and 15 May has passed, so 26 full years.
  2. Months. Count full months from the last birthday to the target date. From 15 May to 15 September is 4 full months; 15 October has not arrived, so 4 months.
  3. Days. Count the days from the last “monthly birthday” to the target date. From 15 September to 4 October is 19 days.

Result: 26 years, 4 months, 19 days. Written as a total, that is 9,638 days, or 1,376 weeks and 6 days. Everything after the year count is where mistakes creep in, which is why a calculator is worth using even when you are confident of the years.

The three cases that catch people out

1. Birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st

If you were born on 31 January, your “monthly birthday” in February does not exist. The convention — used by banks, HR systems and this calculator — is to take the last day of the shorter month. So 31 January to 1 March is 1 month and 1 day, not 29 days. Some online tools count a month as 30 days flat, which is why two calculators can show different months and days for the same person; the year count is always the same.

2. Born on 29 February

In a non-leap year a leap-day birthday is treated as 28 February for age purposes. The year count goes up on 28 February, and the next-birthday countdown points to 28 February in ordinary years and 29 February in leap years. Legally this varies by country — some treat the birthday as 1 March — so for a document that hinges on the day itself, check the issuing authority’s rule.

3. Age on a date that is not today

“How old will I be on the shoot date?” and “how old was I when the certificate was issued?” are the same calculation with a different end date. Change the “Age on” field in the calculator rather than adding months in your head; it also tells you whether the person is under 18 on that date.

Age on a shoot date: a note for models and casting teams

On ZJELL Models every portfolio carries a date of birth that the desk checks against ID before the Verified badge is issued. Clients filter and brief by age range, so the number that matters is the model’s age on the day of the shoot. Two rules follow from that:

  • Models who are under 18 on the shoot date join through a parent or guardian account, the guardian signs the release, and no one messages the model directly — the ZJELL desk handles contact.
  • A model who turns 18 between the brief and the shoot should say so in the enquiry. The desk will confirm which paperwork applies for the actual date.

If you are putting a brief together, run the age calculator with the shoot date in the “Age on” box for each shortlisted model, and the date of birth calculator the other way when you know an age but need the birthday for the release form.

Total days include leap days, which is why 18 years is 6,574 days and not 18 × 365 = 6,570. For your own exact totals — days, weeks, hours and the weekday you were born on — the calculator shows them under the main result.

Using the calculator

  1. Enter the day, month and year of birth.
  2. Leave “Age on” as today, or set it to the date you need — a shoot, an exam, a visa appointment.
  3. Press Calculate age. You get years, months and days; the weekday of birth; days to the next birthday; and totals in months, weeks, days and hours.
  4. Nothing is sent anywhere — the calculation runs in your browser and no date is stored.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my age exactly?

Count full years since your date of birth (one less if your birthday has not come round yet this year), then full months since your last birthday, then the remaining days. The free age calculator does this for any date.

What is my age in days?

Multiply isn’t enough because of leap years. Count the exact days between the two dates, including every 29 February in between; the calculator shows the total days, weeks and hours.

How is age calculated for a form or a visa?

In completed years on the date the form asks for — usually the application date or a fixed cut-off date. Set that date in the “Age on” box rather than using today.

Why do different age calculators give different months and days?

Some count a month as 30 days; this one uses real calendar months, so a birthday on the 31st rolls to the last day of shorter months. The year count is identical on every correct calculator.

What age do models need to be?

There is no single minimum. Under-18s can model with a guardian account and guardian consent; adult briefs state their own range, and the age that counts is the model’s age on the shoot date.
