How the ideal weight is worked out

The headline range is the weight that gives a body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height — the WHO healthy range and the figure doctors use first. Below it the calculator shows four classic "ideal body weight" formulas, each a base weight at 5 feet plus an amount per inch above that:

FormulaMenWomen
Devine (1974)50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch
Robinson (1983)52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch
Miller (1983)56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch
Hamwi (1964)48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch

The formulas differ by several kilograms because they were fitted to different populations for medical dosing. None allows for frame size, muscle or age, which is why the BMI range — and for South Asians the narrower Indian guideline range of BMI 18.5 to 22.9 — is the better everyday guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal weight for my height?

The weight that puts your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 — for 165 cm that is about 50 to 68 kg. Formula "ideal" weights such as Devine or Robinson give a single point inside or near that range.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each was fitted to a different population and purpose (mostly drug dosing). The spread is normal; treat them as reference points rather than targets.

Does frame size matter?

Yes. A large-framed person sits naturally near the top of the healthy range and a small-framed person near the bottom. Wrist circumference relative to height is the usual frame-size check.

Is there a different ideal weight for Indians?

Indian guidelines use a narrower healthy BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 because cardiometabolic risk rises at a lower BMI in South Asians. The calculator shows that range separately.

Is this chart suitable for children?

No. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific growth percentiles, not adult ranges.
